Mount Inamura-gatake

With an elevation of 1726 meters, Mount Inamura-gatake stands as the sole independent peak in the Omine mountain range. Contrasting with the female-restricted Mount Omine (Mount Sanjo-gatake), it is often referred to as “Omine for Women.” From May to June, the mountain showcases the vibrant blooms of Mitsuba Tsutsuji (Japanese Andromeda) and azaleas, followed by Oyama Renge (Giant Larkspur) and Iwakagami (Saxifrage) in June to July. Autumn foliage and winter frost-covered trees are also attractions for climbers. Throughout the year, a number of mountain climbers enjoy the mountain. The summit provides a panoramic view of Omine Okugake-michi, the deep mountain trail. In contrast to the female-restricted Mount Omine (a.k.a. Mount Sanjo-gatake), women are allowed to climb Mount Inamura-gatake, hence earning the nickname “Omine for Women.” The Inamura-gatake Sanso (accommodation), located at the Sanjogatsuji, is open from spring to autumn (reservation required). There is also a public toilet next to the hut (a small tip is appreciated).

Check out “YAMAP” for courses and other details provided by Tenkawa Village staff who walked this route.

*When mountain climbing, download a map from YAMAP, and check the course and your location for your safety.

*Caution is advised for the section with partial collapses near Sanjogatsuji and the areas around Dainichi Kiretto (a place where the ridge is deeply cut) and just below the summit.

*The “Rengetsugi” course is a trail through rocky streambeds. There are sections where the mountain path may not be clearly defined. Pay special attention during the ascent, and if you are a mountain climbing beginner, it is recommended to take the ridge course provided in the link above.

*For those who wish to try the custom-made Shugendo training experience at Mount Inamura-gatake, visit the Nara Prefecture Visitors Bureau’s website.
