Numerous historically important figures visited this village such as emperors, including Emperor Temmu (a.k.a. Imperial Prince Oama; 7th century) and Emperor Godaigo (1288-1339) who resided in the Southern Court set in this region in the mid-14th century. Buddhist saints such as Kobo Daishi Kukai (774-835) and Enku (1632-1695) as well as Motomasa Kanze (15th century; a prominent Noh performer), Michizane Sugawara (845-903; a Heian-period court officer and scholar), and Saigyo (1118-1190; a legendary monk and poet), have all visited this area.
